That’s according to research by LearnBonds, that reveals that around 1.56 billion game consoles have been sold globally. The PlayStation 2 accounts for the biggest share with 10.07 percent ahead of other notable devices from Atari, Microsoft, Nintendo and Sega.
PlayStation 2 Is the Most Loved Gaming Console
According to the report, by the end of March 2020, approximately 157.68 million PS2 consoles had been sold globally. The Nintendo DS comes second with 154.9 million units, followed by the Game Boy at 118.69 million. Sony’s current-gen game console, PlayStation 4, comes third with 109.86 million units sold globally, followed by the original PlayStation with 102.5million units.
Other top-selling game consoles of all time include Wii ( 101.64 million), PlayStation (87.41 million) Xbox 360 (85.8 million), Game Boy Advance (GBA) (81.51 million) and PlayStation Portable (81.09 million) units.
Europe Was The Biggest Consumer for PS2
According to the reports, Europe was the biggest consumer of Sony PlayStation 2, almost accounting for 55.28 million of all units sold globally. After that North America follows closely with 53.65 million units, while Sony’s home country, Japan, accounts for 23.18 million units. The rest of the world stands at 25.57 million units.
The research attributes the success of the PS2 to a number of reasons, including the time it remained on the market before the PS3’s launch. What’s more, the console also has a huge library of games that made it more popular than the original PlayStation. The further reports said that PlayStation 2 also had the functionality of a DVD player in it, that is something that sold the console much more both as a home theater device and as a modern gaming device.
