INTRO: With the event of face recognition technologies over the past few years, privacy is gradually becoming a myth for the overall public. face recognition tools just like the “Clearview AI” simply kills the concept of privacy because it can recognize anyone from its database of three billion pictures. So, to guard users against these sorts of face recognition tools, scientists have developed a tool that will make minimal changes to your face in your pictures to trick most of the face recognition tools out there within the market.

Developed by a team of scientists from the University of Chicago’s Sand Lab, “Fawkes” may be a unique tool that will cause you to unrecognizable to most face recognition tools like Microsoft’s Azure Face and Amazon’s Rekognition.

Now, confine mind, although your face is going to be unrecognizable by any face recognition tool, you yourself won’t be ready to distinguish between the first image and therefore the converted image. And this is often where AI (AI) comes into play.

How Does Fawkes “Cloak” the Faces?

Now, scientifically speaking, the method that this tool follows is termed as “cloaking”, because it intends to change the sources that aid the face recognition tools. So, the tool essentially uses AI to form subtle changes to the faces and these changes remain hidden from human eyes. However, if any face recognition tool tries to research the image , it won’t be ready to do match it with any picture from its database.

The team of developers of “Fawkes” (named after the V for Vendetta character, Guy Fawkes) reportedly published a paper on the AI-algorithm of the tool earlier this year. Moreover, the team recently launched the tool as a free-to-download software for Windows and Mac users.

The Difference is Undetectable

So, I downloaded the tool which came for around 125MB for my Windows PC. After downloading, I ran the tool on one among my pictures to “cloak” it, and therefore the result’s right below.

Now, as you’ll see, both of my images look just about an equivalent, apart from the weird texture of the skin of my face. However, the one on the proper is the cloaked one. So, now you’ll imagine how subtle the changes are that the AI-algorithm makes to “cloak” your face from the face recognition tools.

“What we do is using the cloaked photo in essence sort of a computer virus, to corrupt unauthorized models to find out the incorrect thing about what causes you to appear as if you and not someone else”, says Ben Zhao, a computing professor who helped develop the tool.

“Once the corruption happens, you’re continuously protected regardless of where you go or are seen.”, he further adds.
